Latest Updates from Our Project:

An Important Day

Hello, everyone. I'd like to take a moment and honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day and how vital its messages of expression, non-violence, and service are in striving for equality and opportunity across this big, diverse world of ours.

I really love this project out of Texas — offering several wonderful elements all in one. It’s a project run by an artist focused on the struggle for self-acceptance and self-love for women of color in the face of societal beauty standards, presented in the form of art and poetry. It looks like it’s going to be great! I have backed this and hope you will give it a look and let other people know as well:

Ok, that font. And China!

We know the video for the campaign isn't, like, amazing, but we have a tight budget and I hoped it would give the sense of the story. Originally, we were going to have a voice say, "Who am I now?" which is a tagline for Part I. However, the audio we had didn't work over the music, so we went with text. I picked about six fonts that might work. I went with the less formal font, to show it's coming from the character. When Chris put the video together, he said, you know, not a fan of that font. I asked him to bring up the other options I'd saved off, and he said he hadn't saved them. So there was a grumpy moment there and we stuck with the original.

Then my 14 year old son saw the video after the project had gone live. He said, "Good video...I'm not a fan of that font." Argh. Ok. Well, here's the deal. You love that font, and how it makes you worry about Dime. You know, who is she now. It's so organic.

On a better note of graphic design, I had the pleasure this weekend of talking with Joey Worldweaver, one of the creators of Split Earth Saga. He was super nice, and as I’ve found, he’s a fantasy author too - in Mandarin. (And a D&D DM, so further awesome.) His team, based in Shanghai, has put together the first Chinese comic series on Kickstarter - and it’s going to be a big success, with art that blends eastern and western aesthetics. The campaign ends mid-day Saturday, so if you’re interested in checking it out, don’t wait. It looks really interesting.

Campaign Updates?

Back to Diamondsong, let me know if you have any requests for campaign updates. Tiny fiction? Answer your questions? More about Dime's world, Ada-ji? I'm always hesitant to do excerpts from the first (or second, now in work) draft, as that hasn't gone through developmental editing yet. But - let me know!

Thanks to each of you for backing. I notice and appreciate each one of you. Please do share the link to others who might enjoy Dime's story. Cheers from snowy Detroit - ♥ E

Thanks to all of you who joined the campaign! What that means is you're interested in reading my story - and that means everything to me.

The best thing you can do to help is to let people know about the project, especially with the recommendation that you are excited to read it.

We had an initial surge of backers and then things really slowed down. I posted to tens of thousands of people through various groups I'm in and...well, it didn't go anywhere. I do think what that means is the word does need to be spread through people who are interested in this story, not by me.

I will still work getting cross-shares and letting people know through various networks, but at some point I recognize this just can't come from me. There are still also misconceptions about this kind of campaign. While they are common in the gaming world, some in publishing still misunderstand the premise: generating pre-orders to help with up-front costs. I do wish I didn't need to rely on it, but I still do. Perseverance. Why? Because of all your encouragement, that you enjoy the stories when you read them. So many of you tell me that at events, and so many who may not be active on the internet or able to share the word, for a variety of reasons. And that's ok too - I understand.

Diamondsong is different - and honestly, I think it's fun. Sometimes the themes get overplayed, like oh, Bell is always thinking about stuff. Well, ok, I am. But more importantly - I think this story is a lot of fun. Big, imaginative worlds, rich, complex characters. I do hope you'll love it.

Please do let people know! And thank you so much! - ♥ E
